From Masquerades to Cultural Resistance

The Supreme Exodus is an ongoing project that explore the creation of hybridized Asian - African textiles and costumes, researching on the history of the African, Asian textile trade in the Americas and their relation with Afro Cuban Yoruban tradition. Investigating the current migration of Latin Americans in the Americas. Starting in Groninger Museum as an initial ignition of the project and landing as children of African American Afrofuturist jazz player Sun Ra in the “Malecon” of Havana.

The project is based on Genetic ancestral studies from a DNA Sequencing and on an analysis of Sylvia Wynter’s 1973 Maskarade: A Jonkunnu Musical Play. The performance research on issues of postcolonial history, migration, cultural appropriation, Yoruba culture, Afro Latin-American identity and political transcultural theoretical praxes.
